Do You Still Have the Time?

Many of us are still staying home, working from home, and have more time on our hands. I know I have already organized my home office drawers, cleaned the basement, and organized my garage. Yes, getting another project done every week. Now, finally we are in Stage 3 and some businesses are opening up.

Record numbers of people have been on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media platforms looking for great content and a personal connection with the companies they are following.

More and more companies are posting more content that will touch their followers, causing them to be perceived as thought leaders and concerned companies, while also not advertising their services and products.

If you are not on your social media platforms, you are missing a great opportunity to strengthen your position and create new connections at a time when social media is being used at its most.

Now! This can be a great time to organize and update your social media pages as well. Most of us usually don't have enough time to post an article and like someone else's post, let alone organize our own pages.

There are nearly 2 billion people on Facebook and over 650 million on LinkedIn. Many of us depend on being visible and consistent on social media for added value and more business. Unfortunately, some of us will be looking for new jobs as businesses reopen in our new "normal."

So, here is my list of things you can do to make your social media pages look their best and professional.

  • Start by deleting old followers you no longer ever talk to.

  • Next, delete anyone who still has not taken the time to put a picture on their profile.

  • Look at all the groups and fan pages you follow and see if they are still active, better yet still excited or in business, delete the ones that are not.

Now that felt good deleting all that, didn't it?

Now for working on making your profile better.

  • If you do not have a professional picture for your profile, get one. Set up an appointment for the very first week your photographer is open. Don't know one? I will introduce you to one.

  • Next, get the main, large picture filled in. Banner picture!

  • On your personal Facebook page, have fun with it. Put a picture of your family, family pet, or last vacation. For a fan or business page, have a picture that tells us a story about the fan page or business. Let people know what you do.

  • On LinkedIn, the main picture on your personal page can represent what you do, a cause you care for, and more. Your company page should represent a picture that relates to what your company does.

This is a good time to give a review on Facebook or a recommendation on LinkedIn. Normally I recommend at least one recommendation and one review per month. If you haven't gone back to work yet or you're working from home, you can bump this up to two a month.

  • Check all your settings and new features. Facebook is about to change the look of its pages. Check it out

  • Change your password on all your accounts. You should do this at least every 6 months.

  • Check your messages and respond. Invite people to connect by writing a personal note. You might remind them how you met.

  • Update your summary, experience, and about you. On LinkedIn, make sure your headline tells people what you offer, not your job title!

  • Remove old skills that no longer apply to what you do now on LinkedIn.

  • Make sure your contact info is up to date; including website links, phone numbers emails, and more

  • Go through your photos and remove outdated pictures and add new ones.
